Exploring Cadillac Ranch and Meow Wolf: A Family Road Trip Adventure

In this blog post, we recount a memorable road trip taken by a family from Texas to California, filled with excitement, exploration, and cherished moments. The journey, planned for two years, finally came to fruition, bringing together my parents Marcos and Linda for an adventure across several states.

Planning the Trip

The anticipation for this trip had been building for months. My parents expressed their excitement, especially since they had primarily vacationed in Texas and Florida. This time, they were set to explore new territories, traveling through New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and finally California.

My Mom was particularly thrilled about celebrating her birthday in Las Vegas, a city she had never visited before. I had arranged a special day for her, including a show at the Luxor, making it a birthday to remember.

The Itinerary

We planned several exciting stops along their route:

  • Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas
  • Meow Wolf in Santa Fe, New Mexico
  • Sandia Peak in Albuquerque, New Mexico
  • Grand Canyon for a day
  • Las Vegas, Nevada
  • San Francisco, California, including Muir Woods and Pier 39
  • Phoenix, Arizona
  • San Angelo, Texas, where Melvin's parents first met

Setting Off on the Journey

As we prepared to hit the road, we packed our bags and set off from Texas. The first leg of our trip was a nine-hour drive to Cadillac Ranch. I surprised my parents with new luggage for Christmas, hinting at the adventure to come.

Cadillac Ranch

Upon arriving at Cadillac Ranch, we were greeted by the iconic art installation of half-buried Cadillacs. The vibrant colors and graffiti-covered cars provided a perfect backdrop for photos and exploration. After enjoying the site, we headed for lunch before continuing their journey to Albuquerque.

Entering New Mexico

Crossing into New Mexico, we stopped at a welcome center to gather information about local dining options and attractions. We enjoyed our first meal in the state, indulging in pancakes and hash browns at a local diner.

Albuquerque Adventures

After a long drive, we finally reached Albuquerque, where we checked into a Marriott hotel. I captured a stunning view from our 17th-floor room, excited for the adventures that awaited us the next day.

Meow Wolf

One of the highlights of our trip was visiting Meow Wolf in Santa Fe. This immersive art installation captivated us with its creativity and interactive exhibits, making it a must-see destination.

Sandia Peak

We also visited the Sandia Tramway, with an elevation of 10,679 feet. Unfortunately we didn't to take in the breathtaking views from the top due to bad weather so we headed off to dinner and then back to the hotel to get some rest.

Conclusion

This road trip was not just about the destinations but also about the quality time we spent together as a family. From the quirky Cadillac Ranch to the artistic wonder of Meow Wolf, each stop offered unique experiences and memories that we could cherish forever. As we continued our journey towards Las Vegas and beyond, the excitement of new adventures awaited us, promising more unforgettable moments together.
